POSITION SUMMARY: The Safety Officer/Training Coordinator develops and ensures proper implementation of citywide safety program for City employees. In that, the incumbent will be tasked with coordinating employee development on safety, supervisory skills, and other skills as necessary. The work includes assisting in the development of departmental safety regulations, procedures, investigating methods and equipment used on City projects to determine compliance with safety standards, delivering and evaluating employee training and the training effectiveness, processing and analyzing accident and injury reports, and recommending methods to avoid risks and to improve overall skills.  This position works under the direct supervision of the Risk Manager, and indirectly to the Human Resources Director providing safety consultation and training services primarily to the Utilities Department, and secondarily to the Public Works, Parks and Recreation, Fire, and Police Departments, and thereafter to all other departments.

  • A High School graduate or GED equivalent is required.  
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.   
  • A bachelor's degree from an institution of higher learning accredited by the U.S. Department of Education through one of its regional accrediting agencies is required; primary focus of education must be in Industrial Safety, Occupational Safety, Safety Management, or directly related discipline is preferred. 
  • At least 2 years of experience directly related as a Safety Officer, or in the safety field may be substituted for the degree requirements, as determined solely by the Risk Manager and Human Resources Director. Such an exception to the degree requirements must be with an active full-time role exclusive to safety. 
  • Progressively responsible experience in a safety position is required. 
  • Direct experience delivering training programs is required. 
  • In-depth knowledge of methods of research is required, specifically in surveys, data collection analysis and reporting. 
  • Prior experience in utility safety or industrial safety is preferred. 
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Missouri Motor Vehicle Operator's license and be insurable under the City's automobile insurance coverage anytime when operating a City vehicle. 
  • Safety Certification is preferred; but must be obtained within 18 months of hire. 
  • Must be able to pass a background investigation, and all required post-offer evaluations. 
  • Must possess no serious driving convictions within the past 5 years. 
  • Must possess a high degree of integrity, strong work ethic and ability to work with minimal supervision.   
  • National Career Readiness Certificate preferred, but not required.
